NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Local part day public holiday- 1 August 2019 Coffs Harbour Gold Cup

I am writing to advise that the Minister for Industrial Relations has declared a part day public holiday under the Public Holidays Act on Thursday 1 August 2019 between 12.00pm midday to 5.30pm for all employees within the Coffs Harbour City Council area, for the Coffs Harbour Gold Cup.

As a designated half day public holiday, all staff will be participating and will not be on duty from 12.00pm midday on this day.

I have been advised that bus routines will not be changed for this day; therefore you will need to make arrangements to collect your child or children from the school at 12.00pm midday.

Creative and Active Kids vouchers now available

Creative kids can now put a $100 voucher towards extra-curricular creative activities outside of school.

Together with Active Kids, this program aims to encourage more NSW children to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities such as coding, languages, circus, performing arts and visual arts.

Parents can apply for one $100 voucher for each child enrolled in school on the Creative Kids website and use it towards the cost of registration, participation or tuition. You just redeem the voucher with a registered provider in your area when making your payment.

This is a great opportunity for your child to become involved in a range of activities that will build on their education, growth and development.

Service NSW is working with industry bodies to deliver the program.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21^st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Do you have a great idea to improve your area?

My Community Project is a new NSW Government funding program that is all about local ideas, local projects and local decisions.

You can apply now for grants from $20,000 - $200,000 for projects that will make a difference to your community. Projects could include new playground equipment, sports facilities, paths or ramps to improve access, public art or a community service.

The local community can vote for their favourite projects in July and successful projects will be announced in September.

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.
If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.
Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.
Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is the new way of providing support for Australians with disability, their families and carers.

The NDIS will provide about 460,000 Australians under the age of 65 with a permanent and significant disability with the reasonable and necessary supports they need to live an ordinary life.

As an insurance scheme, the NDIS takes a lifetime approach, investing in people with disability early to improve their outcomes later in life.

The NDIS gives all Australians peace of mind that if their child or loved one is born with or acquires a permanent and significant disability they will get the support they need.

The NDIS supports people with disability to build skills and capability so they can participate in the community and employment.

The NDIS helps people with disability to:

Access mainstream services and supports

These are the services available for all Australians from people like doctors or teachers through the health and education systems. It also covers areas like public housing and the justice and aged care systems.

Access community services and supports

These are activities and services available to everyone in a community, such as sports clubs, community groups, libraries or charities.

Maintain informal support arrangements

This is help people get from their family and friends. It is support people don't pay for and is generally part of most people's lives.

Receive reasonable and necessary funded supports

The NDIS can pay for supports that are reasonable and necessary. This means they are related to a person's disability and are required for them to live an ordinary life and achieve their goals.

Assistance from the NDIS is not means tested and has no impact on income support such as the Disability Support Pension and Carers Allowance.

Monday - We need teams from each sporting house for the Mini Olympics. Please make a group of 10 and write them on the team sheets outside the Home Economics Staffroom.

Tuesday - Lunchtime activities. There will be a knockout handball competition in the quadrangle, Dodgeball will be on in the hall!

Year 9 and 10 will be attending a four day camp to Moreton Island, QLD in November.

The 2018 Year 9/10 Excursion will be a four day camp to Moreton Island Adventure Tours in Queensland.

A maximum of 100 students will be accommodated on the trip the first 50 from each year will attend.

The details are as follows:

Date: Tuesday 27^th November – Friday 30^th November.

Cost: A deposit of $150 will be due by Friday 29^th June (Wk 9, Term 2) Total cost will be $390.
Remainder will be due by Friday 21^st September (Wk 9, Term 3).

Sue Larkey's 12 Top TIps to assist students within the Autism Spectrum

1. Understand the child's difference (strengths and challenges), accept their different way of thinking, learning, socialising, etc .

2. Break it down. Break tasks down into smaller parts and give them each step sequentially. If possible, give them a checklist to mark off as they do each step. Do NOT expect the children to multitask! Allow them extra time to get it done, but let them finish! It is important to finish one task before going to another.

3. Slow it down. Be aware of communication difficulties. Allow time to process verbal information, use visuals, and don't overload them with verbal information.

4. Use their special interests to motivate and engage – their strengths are motivated by their interest.

5. Show them what is expected and what is happening, then they have less need to fight for control (i.e. schedules, routines, timers).

6. Be careful how you use words, their literalness can mean they misunderstand you. Avoid words like ‘could', ‘would', ‘can' as they perceive them as a choice, e.g. "Can you start work" can be seen as a choice.

7. Use visuals to support learning: schedules, photos, pictures, symbols, timetables, highlight key information, mind maps, etc.

8. Prepare by previewing. If possible ‘preview' the learning ahead of time, to give a mental framework of what is being presented or what is next.

9. Check in regularly – don't wait for the student to ask for help – check in (learning, social and behaviour).

10. Computers and iPads are enabling for so many people with ASD, they can help build connections and confidence.

11. They find it hard to see things from other people's perspective. This is known as ‘theory of mind'. They might also find it hard to understand and predict other people's behaviour, and to understand how their behaviour affects others.

12. They often find it hard to recognise facial expressions and the emotions behind them. They may miss facial cues from adults about behaviour, or social cues from peers.

Our school community would like to wish Corey Warn from year 12 all the best as he embarks on the gruelling Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea during the holidays. Corey will be a wonderful ambassador for Toormina High School and will also be representing Indigenous youth, the Deaf Society and the Army Cadets. He will be walking for 9 days and covering 96 kilometres in this physically and mentally challenging trek. When Corey returns he will be presenting a talk to the Lions Club, Quota and the Deaf Society about his adventure. Best wishes Corey!

Prospective students and families of Toormina High School are invited to an Information Evening on Monday 26th February.
From 5pm-6pm there will be optional school tours which will showcase our facilities and give families the opportunity to view demonstration lessons in a range of faculties and subject areas.

From 6pm - 7pm there will be an Information session from the Principal, Head Teacher Wellbeing and Year Adviser. Families will also be able to meet and greet teaching staff.

Staff Development Day at Toormina High School today has involved the updating of CPR qualifications and presentations on new programs to be introduced in 2018.
Our Year 7 students will start their secondary education tomorrow, then, Year 11 & 12 will start their school year on Wednesday, January 31 and Years 8, 9 & 10 on Thursday, February 1. The new Toormina High School hours, 8:55am to 3:10pm will also begin.

Congratulations to two of Toormina High School's outstanding teachers who received recognition recently for their outstanding contribution to education.
International Teachers Day Awards are offered by the Australian College of Educators and awarded across Australia, recognising outstanding educators.
Mrs Jennifer Bryant, Head Teacher Science, was recognised for her outstanding contribution to Toormina High School through her leadership of the Science Department. Under Jennifer's leadership, the Science Faculty has grown to be the largest faculty at Toormina High School, covering all of the Sciences including exciting elective Science classes in Years 9 and 10.
Ms Sally Johnston was recognised for her outstanding teaching in English and the leadership of debating at Toormina High School and across the North Coast Region. Under Sally's commitment and drive, Toormina High School has risen to be known as a recognised powerhouse for debating across the region, with Sally running regional debating camps and working with Partner Primary Schools.

2018 Year 7 Parent Information Night

Year 7 Book Packs will be for sale - $70 with calculator, $50 without, and the Uniform Shop will be open. We have external agency stalls including NSW Health, bus companies and mental health providers.

We will conduct tours of school , have a 'creche' available and provide light refreshments.

THS TRANSITION PROGRAM

Students in Year 6 are supported in their transition to Toormina High School through a comprehensive program to orientate students to the expectations and operation of high school. A high level of direct interaction between primary school students and the secondary school occurs on a regular basis prior to the start of Year 7.
The first day of the high school year at THS is allocated exclusively to the Year 7 Cohort so students can familiarise themselves with daily school life. For the first week students are met by their teachers in the quadrangle at the start of each period and proceed to the classroom together. Programs also provide support for learning and the social and personal aspects of transition. The SMILE Peer Support Program pairs Year 7 students with Year 10 peer support leaders. The need for learning support is accessed through by classroom teachers and our Learning Support Team.
We host an afternoon for Year 7 parents early in Term One to give parents and carers the opportunity to meet and speak with their child's teachers and connect with families of other students.
The Role of the Year Adviser is diverse. At THS they are the first point of contact for parents and students. The same Year Adviser assists and supports the year group through their time at Toormina High School which provides a fundamental connection for student's wellbeing connecting the school, student, parents and teachers. The Year Adviser for 2018 Year 7 is Adam Berrada.
The Bonding Excursion (above photos from 2017) is run early in the term to encourage students to connect to teachers and other students, to challenge themselves and to extend their circle of friends through participation in fun activities. A camp during the year also provides further opportunities for team building, resilience activities and encourages and builds skills in the year group. Year 7 Sport is held at school and is another opportunity for students to interact with their peers.

Teachers were thrilled by the huge turn-out of year 12 HSC students who attended the Higher School Certificate Tutoring Workshops during the school holidays. Students were able to spend an additional 3 days of quality one-on-one time with experienced stage 6 teachers to finalise their comprehension of English, mathematics, science, PDHPE and TAS subjects.

It was a very exciting day in the THS Library yesterday with four teams of students from years 7, 8 and 9 participating in an Australian wide competition to write and illustrate a book in a day . The groups started at 8am and finished at 8pm! Our dedicated staff fed them and stayed in the library until they finished (with 5 mins to spare!). The competition is organised by the Kids Cancer Project and the books will be printed for children's hospitals. Congratulations to all involved!

Headstart to University

We were extremely proud of our four year 11 students who all gained a Distinction in 'Communication in Organisations' as part of the Head-Start Program at Southern Cross University.
By successfully completing the Head-Start program, students are able to: be offered a place in a select number of Southern Cross University courses, be granted advanced standing for the completed unit of study when enrolling in a relevant SCU course and have reduced HECS liability through advanced standing for the unit completed.

Regional Number One!

Alikkan Jerrard, in year 10, is the Number 1 High Jumper in our region and is now off to the State Championships!
Alikkan jumped 1.79m at the Regional Carnival in Lismore and this will be the fourth year in row he has qualified for State. He has come second the last three years and is looking forward to the opportunity to crack the state number one in 2017!

KOKODA CHALLENGE 2017

Over the last week of the school holidays a THS team once again participated in the Kokoda Challenge. This team included Lucy Thomas and Kate Williams and 8 students. Their challenge was to walk 52 kms through the Gold Coast hinterland. Sounds easy – that was until a massive storm hit at about 5.00pm. The teams started at 11.00am on the Saturday and completed the walk at about 4.45am on Sunday morning. The teams demonstrated the values that we strive to teach our students – teamwork, cooperation, initiative and to never give up. What an excellent job.

RAINBOW RUN

Tomorrow, Friday, June 30, the Rainbow Run will go ahead, weather permitting. You will be able to purchase wristbands, ($2 or $5 with coloured powder) during recess in the quad, we are raising money for the Cancer Council.
Don't forget you are expected to wear full school uniform to school and bring a change of clothing with you (preferably old as they will stain), an old towel and plastic bag. My advice is to wear eye protection (sunnies or swimming goggles). If you are an asthma sufferer be sure to have your puffers handy just in case.
NOTE: NO ONE WILL BE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE IN THEIR UNIFORMS. You are expected to get changed during lunch and you will have the opportunity to get changed into clean clothing to go home after the oval has been cleaned up. This will be expected for those catching buses home.
This will be a fun run with students and staff!

SPIRIT WEEK at THS!

The last week of Term 2 is SPIRIT WEEK at Toormina High and the SRC and Ms Cheers have been hard at work planning a great week of activities!

Monday - is a gold coin mufti day and the theme is Ugly Jumper (sweater) Day. Raid the oldies cupboards, the op shop or the craft box and decorate. At lunch there will be a giant Kahoot game in the hall. All are welcome and you can make a team or go it alone. You will need a device and there is a prize for the highest score.

Tuesday - the Marngrook football final will be held on the oval during lunch

Wednesday - There will be a multicultural showcase of talent in the quad, along with bushtucker and Henna tattooing.

Thursday - a giant dodgeball game will be held on the oval at lunchtime and all are welcome to play.

Friday - The rainbow run (colour run) will be held from 1-2.30 on the oval. This is a fundraiser for the Cancer Council. Wristbands are to be pre-purchased for this activity during recess and lunch from Monday in the quad. Students will need to bring a change of old clothes as the colours will stain.

During the next few months Year 10 students will be considering their options for senior schooling and transition to work. We have planned a number of events to assist students make informed subject choices. This information will also enable THS to offer broader subject choices, greater flexibility for students and also cater to the individual needs of students, ranging from University options to transition to work.

Parent Information Evening and Expo – Monday 5 June from 6:00pm – 7:30pm

This is an opportunity for students and parents to learn about the New South Wales Education Standards Authority requirements for the HSC, an explanation of the Record of School Achievement (ROSA), ATAR, and information on options and pathways available at THS. The evening will include presentations from senior students and staff. Light refreshments will be provided from 5:45pm.

Subject Selections – Open Monday 5 June, Close 26^th June

Applications are now open for year 6 students interested in applying for a place in the 2018 Year 7 Extension class at THS. This amazing opportunity offers Gifted & Talented students a chance to extend their skills in a challenging and supportive learning environment. Students will be encouraged to participate in a wide range of school-based and extra-curricular events, including debating, public speaking, Project Based Learning, cultural and sporting activities.

Application forms have been forwarded to local primary schools and are also available from THS office. or 2018 Ext Class Application (pdf 160 KB). Families should complete their sections of the application, provide relevant documents and return these to the student's primary school office for completion of the school's section by Monday 5th June. The primary school will then forward all applications to Toormina High.

Applicants will be contacted by THS by the end of Term 2 and interviews for the class will be conducted early Term 3.

Active Arvos at THS

Active Arvos is a program which aims to enhance student health and wellbeing through participation in a range of non - competitive, social and sporting opportunities. The program will run on Monday afternoons at school from 3.30 to 4.30pm. All students from Toormina High School are welcome to attend and participate in a range of field, court and fitness based activities which will be run by qualified teachers and based on student interests and the facilities available.

If your child is interested in attending Active Arvos on a weekly or intermittent basis it is essential you fill out a permission slip (available at PDHPE staffroom) and return it to the PDHPE staffroom. A roll will be kept each week and it is important that you fill in any relevant medical conditions. Parents of students who are choosing to attend Active Arvos on a regular basis are asked to inform the school if their child will be away so staff are able to ensure the whereabouts of students. Students will be required to make their own way home.

2017 Athletics Carnival

Toormina High School will be holding its annual athletics carnival on Friday, 26 May at Coffs Harbour stadium. There will be no lessons at school on this day and all students are required to attend the carnival.

All students are to come to school in the morning and attend an assembly at 8.55 a.m. Students will then be directed to buses for travel to the stadium, where the rolls will be marked. Cost will be $5.00 for the bus and stadium fees which is to be paid on the day (please attempt to bring the correct change).

Buses will return to school in the afternoon in time for normal school bus runs.

Students will not be allowed to leave the stadium area during the day.

Triple jump will be run from 9.00 to 9.40 so any student wishing to compete in this event will need to make their own way to the stadium or travel out on the first bus from school.

Canteen facilities will be operating all day at the stadium.

Students are reminded to bring a hat and sunscreen and to dress in house colours.

The Department of Education is seeking people who are interested in commencing work within public schools in your area.

The School Administrative and Support (SAS) Staff Reference Group welcome any people looking to start work in school administration to enrol in our Non- Teaching Staff School Introduction training programs.

The aim of this training is to provide participants with an overview of school administrative roles. Participation in this Introduction day is not a guarantee of employment with the Department of Education. Following this introduction day, it will be up to individuals to contact schools and follow up possible employment. Participants would then also need to obtain a Working with Children Check (WWCC) clearance (at their own cost) through Service NSW and apply for a Department of Education employee number through a local public school. Many schools have a policy of not employing current parents or associates within their own school.

The Coffs Harbour Training Day will be held at the Coffs Racing Club – Wednesday 29 March 2017.

The Mathematics Faculty at THS has found the Maths Online site to be very useful in the reinforcement of skills. The site caters for the Australian Curriculum from kindergarten to year 12 and Mathematics Extension 1. The address for this site is http://www.mathsonline.com.au/.

The usual enrolment price is $197 per student per year . However, the Maths Department have negotiated a price of $20 per student per year which will be paid for by Toormina High School.

Your student will bring home a permission note this week, this must be completed and returned to school by Friday, February 17 for their subscription to be processed.

THS is hoping to secure a grant, in the future, to redesign our library into a 21st century learning space.

The year 8 TAS classes and the IM class will be researching and designing options for our library as part of their Project Based Learning with involvement from a local architect, a furniture company, the State Library and Jenny Murray, Director, Public Schools.

The project will include input from students, parents and school community members via a survey (attached link), we would appreciate it if you could take a few minutes to complete, thanks for your support.

Monday, September 19 will be our Presentation Day and we look forward to sharing the student's designs with you!

Coffs/Clarence Police have issued a warning to young people and their parents in relation to the dangers of social media.

In recent weeks at least 2 local teenage girls have been contacted via their social media accounts by strangers. On each occasion the stranger has pretended to be a police officer and has subsequently demanded the young person supply inappropriate photos of themselves via the social media platform. The stranger has on both occasions attempted to threaten and intimidate the young person when the demands weren't immediately met.

Police wish to reiterate that we don't contact anyone, particularly young people, via any social media program or platform. Parents are asked to discuss this with their children, monitor their children's use of social media and reinforce the potential dangers of communicating with strangers in this manner. It goes without saying that personal photos of this type should never be sent to any person, let alone a stranger, regardless of the circumstances. Social media approaches such as these should be reported immediately.

THS is holding a Youth Wellbeing Seminar on Monday, July 25. The keynote address will be presented by Nic Newling who will talk about his experiences and challenges during high school. As an ambassador for the Black Dog Institute Nic has been able to share his inspiring story.

The cost for the day is $15 for year 10 students (includes lunch) and $7 for year 11 & 12 students to attend the morning session.

THS Swimming Carnival will be held this Wednesday, February 3 at Sawtell Pool.

Students must come to school and attend assembly. Cost is $7.20 for bus travel and pool entry. Buses will return to school in the afternoon for the normal school bus runs. No students will be dismissed from the pool unless picked up by a parent. Students may wear house colours, year 12 will be running a BBQ and drinks etc. will be available from pool canteen.

HOUSE COLOURS are Barramundi, red (student surname start with letter A-D), Marlin, blue (E - K), Nannygai, yellow (L - R), Trevally, black and white (S - Z).

At our 2015 Major Awards Assembly Blake Greenway was announced as the 2014 Toormina High School Dux, congratulations Blake.

Other awards included: the University of new England Vice Chancellor's High Achievement Prize to Tarsha Shipman, the University of Newcastle Award for Academic Excellence to Trung Bui, the University of Newcastle Faculty of Science & InformationTechnology Year 11 Excellence Award to Layne Murphy, the University of Newcastle Faculty of Science & Information Technology Highly Commended Award to Jarrod Blaxland and a Certificate of Merit for Outstanding Attendance to Kristy Fuller.

The award for Academic Achievement by an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Student was presented to Ace Craigie. The Principal's Year 10 Scholarships were awarded to Nadine Hughes, Kaitlin Bland, Matisse Herdegen and Mitchell Biggin. Bonville Sawtell Lions Neville Brown Memorial Scholarship was won by Travis Lee and Nadine Hughes and the Sawtell Rotary Citizenship Awards went to Hunter Bake-Smith, Matisse Herdegen and Erykah Kitchener-Waters. The Rainy McDonald Award for Service to Legacy in Year 11 was presented to Nathan Pollitt and the Australian Defence Force Long Tan Leadership & Teamwork Scholarship went to Nadine Hughes. Jake Windows won a Novaskill award for school based Apprentices and Mark Gemitizza won the Coastal Wardrobes Prize for excellence in his work placement. The Zonta Encouragement Award went to Gypsy-Lee Musumeci and the Quote Caring & Sharing Student Award was presented to Shaylee Poole. Jacob Robinson-McKay was awarded the Merle Paul Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Encouragement Award and debating awards were presented to Drew Gilchrist and Tarquin Jones. Year advisers handed out Citizenship Awards and badges for the first time in 2015, recipients were: year 7, Ee Ee Nuon, year 8, Georgia Elliot & Ella Burgun, year 9, Chloe Rann, year 10, Orion Parkes and year 11, Nathan Pollitt.

At the Farewell Assembly on Tuesday, September 15, Elizabeth Ross was presented with the Caltex All Rounder Award. Justin Pryce received the Australian Defence Force Long Tan Leadership & Teamwork Award. Trung Bui and Brian Adam demonstrated endeavour, engagement & determination in their senior years and this was rewarded with Principal's Awards. Brian also was awarded the Rueben F. Scarf Award and Emily Taylor was presented with the Coffs Harbour City Council Award for 'consistency, effort and application'. Ben Sonter received the Pierre de Coubertin and Premier's Challenge medals for excellence and commitment in the sporting discipline. Academic Excellence Awards were presented to: Grace Autry-Hall, Trung Bui, Connor Cheers, Jye Fisher, Jaden Keenes, Jason Lieschke, Justin Pryce, Chrystal Ridgeway, Elizabeth Ross, Benjamin Sonter, Nikki Stacey, Darcy Tees, Indira Watkins-Wright and Nathan Watt. The Homework Centre will be open on Mondays and Thursdays from 3:30pm to 5:00pm in the school library.

Teaching staff will be available to help your child with homework, assessments, revision or even to run through class lessons that your child may have trouble understanding.

Please think about using this FREE service as the more support we receive the more support we can provide.

Encourage your child to catch-up and stay up-to-date with this fantastic service.

Toormina High School P&C is holding a fundraiser to support our school. The "Your Inspiration At Home" catalogue has been sent home to all families via the eldest student at the school. If you have missed out on a catalogue and order form please contact the school on 66533077.

Have a look through the catalogue at the wide range of delicious Australian made products and place an order before Thursday, 21st May. Don't forget to ask the rest of the family or your neighbours if they would like to order as the more orders there are the more money the school makes.

REWARDS EXCURSION

In recognition of the effort and application our students regularly demonstrate at THS we are holding a Rewards Excursion. This excursion is only open to those students who received an academic, merit or encouragement award in Semester 2, 2014 or those nominated by Head Teachers as outstanding school citizens. Congratulations!

The excursion will take place on Thursday, April 2 and involve a visit to the Big Banana. The cost is $35 per student. The bus will depart THS at 9:00am and return at 3:00pm. Signed permission notes must be returned to the school office by Friday, March 20 and full payment by Thursday, March 26.

Students may bring (or purchase) food and swimwear if they intend to use the waterslide. Students are encouraged to bring a hat and water bottle and covered shoes.

THS year 11 student, Elizabeth Ross, recently gained a distinction in the 'Human Physiology' unit as part of the 'Head-Start' program at Southern Cross University. This program enables students to gain direct entry and advanced standing into a variety of courses at SCU.

Elizabeth also gave a speech at the Graduation Ceremony and was a wonderful representative of our school, congratulations.

'headspace' at Toormina High School

Coffs Harbour organisation 'headspace' delivers early intervention services to young people (12 -25 years) who are at risk of experiencing, or are experiencing, emerging mental health issues. Jo Magill, a youth worker with 'headspace' will be working at THS every second Thursday to provide access for students who may benefit from services provided by 'headspace'. Appointments can be made through THS Deputy, Kathy McDowell. Ms. Magill will be at THS next, on Thursday, November 13.

Leaving School - Literacy and Numeracy Tests

Students intending to leave school before completing the HSC have the option of taking online Literacy and Numeracy tests at school on Monday, October 27.

The tests are prepared and marked by the Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards NSW (BOSTES).

Students completing the tests will receive reports detailing their level of skill in literacy and numeracy.Discussions with employer groups reveal that the ability to provide tangible evidence of these skills is highly regarded when they are making a decision to employ.

The tests consist of a range of short-answer questions that relate to aspects of everyday life such as reading a recipe, preparing a quote and providing directions to a location.

If your son or daughter is interested in taking online Literacy and Numeracy tests, it is important they notify Mrs McDowell by Thursday, October 20, so they can be enrolled.

Friday July 18 will be a Cystic Fybrosis Fundraiser run by our SRC. A Mufti Day will be held, students who would like to wear mufti to school will donate $2 to Cystic Fibrosis research. Mufti Day requires students to wear; no thongs or sandals, inappropriate t shirts or mid riff tops and shorts must be an appropriate length for school. Hair colour is $2, sausage sandwiches $2 and soft drink $2.

P & C Pie Drive

An order form has been attached below. Copies are also available at the front office and for those with an email address a copy has been emailed to you with the latest newsletter.

There are several projects the P & C are working on at the moment that they are actively fundraising for including the purchase of a school bus.

Orders with payment need to be to the school office by Tuesday the 17th of June. Distribution or collection of the pies will be on Wednesday the 25th of June.

Minimbah Project Birth Certificate Sign Up Day

'Embrace the ANZAC Spirit' by Brenton Knight

I'm standing here today to undertake a task usually reserved for men and women who have seen the harsh realities of war. It is a task which cannot be taken lightly. Ever since I was a child I've been fascinated with the military. The sights and sounds that are associated with it are like music to my ears. Throughout my childhood I've had the privilege to meet countless men and women serving in uniform, witness the roles they undertake and learn their stories of hardship, so similar to those of the ANZACs almost 100 years ago. Late last year I had the chance to witness the naval centenary alongside the most powerful men and women in militaries across the world today. Meeting them opens your eyes to just how much the effects of warfare have had on them. This opportunity was like a dream come true and furthered my motivation to join the armed forces.

I don't wish this speech to be one that glorifies war or praises our victories, because as you know war is merely one role of the many hundereds undertaken by the men and women in uniform today.

As a young citizen growing up in a country that is free from the harsh realities of war and free from the fear associated with it, it is hard to comprehend just how much the men and women of our armed forces have forgone so that we can immerse our selves in this freedom. Although us young members of society don't yet realise it, the youth of today are the ANZACs of tomorrow. The youth of today are soldiers, sailors, airmen, and women to carry on this legacy. The youth of today are our nation's warriors of tomorrow. The ANZACs have given my generation the freedom and the choice to do whatever we wish. Here in Australia we are free to roam the streets without fear of bullets whizzing past our ears, the fear of sending our children to school with the uncertainty of them returning that afternoon. It's here at educational institutions such as this that our youth learn the legend of the ANZAC and how to apply it to their own induvidual lives. They learn the valuable traits of teamwork, mateship, trust and leadership that were created by those gallant men almost 100 year ago.

Although our first thoughts of the armed forces is thier involvement in war it is merely one role of hundreds that they undertake. As you are all most likely aware there is a multinational effort underway off Western Australia at the moment with the Navies, Air force and Maritime organisations all working in unison to find flight MH370. The RAAF currently have three aircraft deployed to the Soloman Islands supplying humanitarian relief for victims of the recent cyclone. The Army, Navy and Airforce are constantly assisting the United Nations with humanitarian and civil rights efforts in countries experiencing civil unrest. As you can see the role is vast and varied of our men and women, who today average 20 and a half years old.

Over the last several years I have been given the opportunity to sound the Last Post and the Reveille at schools across the Coffs Coast. Being given a task shrouded with such history and tradition is only what I can describe as a pure privilege. Seeing the faces of the children sitting attentively through the services is one that usually brings a tear to my eye. Although their understand of the ANZAC tradition is limited, they still have the maturity and compassion to understand that the ANZAC legend is one that required the utmost attention and respect.

When my bugle sounds in the stillness and calm of the early morning it is a truly daunting feeling to know that you are sounding the one song that pays the utmost respect to our fallen. The faces of the children, who for most of them, have never heard a tune so chilling in their lives, is unforgettable.

They know just how much these ANZAC services mean to Australia, and just how much the ANZAC legend means to the respect and patriotism that Australians are accustomed to.

And so as I come to a close I call on you, the youthful students attending here today to listen closely to the words of our veterans. Embrace the spirit of the ANZAC as your grandfathers and uncles would have done in the years gone by. Embrace this legend with dignity and look to tomorrow for the opportunity to use these traits that are so prominent in our ANZACs. You are the ANZACs of tomorrow, the soldiers, the sailors, airmen and airwomen to proudly don the uniform of our armed services, proudly fly the Southern Cross on your shoulder and proudly serve for a nation which has given so much for the freedom you enjoy today.

In two years time it will be me embracing this legacy as I follow in the footsteps of many relatives who have served within the military persuing a career with the Royal Australian Navy.

Lovebites Program

The Lovebites Program about safe and respectful relationships will be run for all Year 10 students during May at THS. This program is presented by THS staff and staff from the Mid Coast Health Services and the Department of Community Services. There is no cost and lunch will be supplied, however students need to bring morning tea, water and an old shirt to protect clothing during the art session. Students are not required to wear school uniform but must wear appropriate clothing (also, no thongs must have covered shoes). The Digital Education Revolution project has come to an end and is no longer funded by the government. Students from Years 10-12 are able to retain their laptops when they complete their schooling but those currently in Year 9 are required to return them to the school whenever they leave.

From 2014, all students will be able to Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) which has the capacity to connect to the Department of Education and Communities (DEC) network.

We are currently developing the school's BYOD policy for publication to you by the end of November and we suggest you wait for this before buying a device (more information in current newsletter).

Aboriginal Education at THS

The Aboriginal Education Team at THS consists of Judith Peen, Penelope Grace, Trudy Watson, Gary Sampson, Kirstin Walker,

Amanda Clifford, Karen Miranda and Simon McKinney. The Aboriginal Education Team is responsible for implementing all

of the state and federal programs with the goal of the team being closing the gap in regards to improving the educational

outcomes of all Aboriginal students. Aboriginal students make up 17% of the THS population and all students are given

the opportunity each year to participate in a variety of programs that not only enhance their educational abilities but also

enables them to participate in community events that celebrate their culture.

Norta Norta, AIME, The 10% on Top Club and the 6 to 7 Orientation program are just a few of the great initiatives that our

students are involved in. 2013 has seen Trudy Watson join the Aboriginal Education Team as Head Teacher Aboriginal

Engagement and Mrs Watson is responsible for Personal Learning Plans and finding post-school opportunities for our Stage

6 students.

The greatest thing about the Aboriginal Team is that our class tutors Gary Sampson, Kirstin Walker, Amanda Clifford and

Karen Miranda are in the classroom helping all of our students at THS.

'Wear it Purple' Day

This year students in year 7 and 8 are participating in the Australian Mathematics Trust 'Mathematics Challenge for Young Australians' enrichment stage.

The Enrichment Stage is a six month program which commenced in April.This program is aimed at extending, challenging and providing enrichment for outstanding students in mathematics.

Mrs Renee Dawson has weekly meetings with the group to provide support for the students, 'the students invoved should be proud of their achievements and the dedication required to participate in such a rigorous program'.

'Factorium Fantastica' has been an outstanding success for the Bongil Bongil Community of Schools. The schools involved were Toormina High and William Bayldon, Toormina, Sawtell, Bonville and Boambee Public Schools.

The production included 300 students, ranging from year 3 to year 12, over 30 staff from all schools and countless parents and volunteers. This teamwork was directed by Cheryl Ward (THS) and Louise Wilson (WBPS).

This musical has been a wonderful opportunity for our students and a fantastic showcase for public education.

Toormina High School was a very sad place this week with the passing of one of our finest young men, Jake Kedzlie in a tragic accident during a football match for his local club, Sawtell Panthers, last weekend.

Jake was a natural sportsman and represented our school in Rugby League, Rugby Union, AFL, Touch Football, Athletics and Indoor Cricket. His skills, leadership qualities and good sportsmanship have been praised by students and staff.

Jake will also be remembered as a great friend, funny, kind and good at bringing out the best in people; humble but very talented, a role model to younger students and always a team player.

This photo shows Sam Donaldson and Liam Reynolds visiting Dylan Coggin the day after they saved his life! Sam spotted Dylan floating face up 6 inches under the water at Southside Sawtell in a rip. Liam dragged Dylan from the water, assessing Dylan using skills learnt in CPR classes in PDHPE at school. Dylan has made a full recovery and the THS community are very proud of our heroes!

Welfare Matters

On behalf of the Welfare Team I would like to welcome our Toormina High Community to 2013.

In 2013, the Welfare Team will continue to provide a variety of programs ranging from anti bullying strategies, vaccinations for years 7 and 10, the Lovebites program and police talks with the School Police Liaison Officer. In addition we will focus on a program to develop resilience amongst year 7 students as they complete their first year of high school.

Year 7

We wish to extend an extra welcome to our Year 7 Parents –especially those joining our school community for the first time. We will be holding a Welcome and Meet the Teacher Afternoon on February 20. An information note will be sent home closer to the date.

Uniform

Toormina High School expects all students to wear their uniform. On occasions when students are unable to wear correct uniform they need to bring a note. They should take this note to the Head Teacher Welfare, where they will be given a pass for the day. Failure to follow this procedure will be dealt with through the discipline system.

If you have uniforms at home that are no longer needed the school would be grateful for the donation. In particular white polo shirts, black basketball shorts and maroon sport shorts are desperately needed.

Could we please remind you that rugger shorts are NOT part of our school uniform. Girls can choose between the school skirt and black shorts. Black shorts can be either the basketball shorts or tailored shorts of a modest length. If you are unsure please contact the school.

As we get into the cooler weather we should also remind you that jumpers should be black, either plain or with the school logo. Hoodies are NOT permitted at school. Jeans are also NOT part of our uniform.

Anti-bullying Strategies at THS

In the coming weeks all students from Year 7 to Year 10 will undertake a lesson delivered by a group from the Welfare Team. The aim of this lesson is to educate students on the difference between conflict and bullying. Often these two terms are confused. Students will explore the definitions of conflict, why people bully and what can be done to combat bullying in society.

The lesson will focus on bullying behaviours and when this becomes bullying.

The definitions used by our school (based on research) will be given to students and are outlined below:

Conflict -an argument, a disagreement, a difference of opinion, a falling out between students.

Bullying behaviour -includes teasing, telling hurtful stories, spreading rumours, taking someone's belongings, rude gestures and deliberately ignoring someone.

Bullying-when bullying behaviour is repeated over a period of time it is bullying.

As a result of this lesson students will be able to identify bullying behaviours and recognise when it becomes actual bullying. This lesson will be followed up with lessons on problem solving and resilience, with the goal of empowering students to deal with conflict and bullying.

Coffee Shop marches forward into its thirteenth year. What a success story! Students from the Support Unit with the assistance of some wonderful Aboriginal peers and other peer supporters work hard to bring you a relaxing and nutritious experience.

Come and join the staff and community members over a cuppa, coffee and cake, or a light lunch. Bring your friends and help students with disabilities at the same time, as they practise skills that will enhance their employment prospects in the future.

Consider holding your staff meeting using this venue. 2012 saw the advent of very successful Breakfast Meetings for community organisations.

A Safe Place for All

Senior students of Toormina High have taken the initiative to create a Gay/Straight Alliance (GSA) within the school. The aim of this innovative group is to unite students regardless of their sexual orientation or gender expression.
The GSA provides a safe haven where students can discuss sexual orientation and gender issues in a supportive environment, as well as encouraging acceptance and tolerance throughout the school.
Students have taken a positive view of the group and a large number have taken interest in coming to meetings and participating in events such as the national Wear it Purple Day on September 7.

'Count Us In'

Toormina High School was the host last Thursday to the musical spectacular that is 'Count us In'.
More than 600 students gathered together at our school from our Partner Primary schools.
Crossmaglen Public brought their whole school of 15 students for the first time! It was lovely to see them all, brought alongby dedicated parents. Toormina Public also brought their whole school and there were 84 students from Sawtell Public. William Bayldon Public could not come this year due to their musical.
We all enjoyed a concert of music and dance items before singing this year's song, 'Different People (Stand Together)', withhundreds of thousands of students from all across Australia.

Jagun 'Elders Lead You Succeed'

This program saw Aunty Iris and Michelle Duroux come to THS to share stories of school experiences, growing up as an Aboriginal person and examples of traditional bush foods and bush plant uses.
Students enjoyed sampling the natural honey, trying to break the 'wild asparagus' vine and rubbing redwood (soap tree) leaves on their hands. They were amazed to hear Aunty Iris' experiences of schooling and sometimes having to walk over 10 kilometres to get home as the bus hadn't come.
'Elders Lead You Succeed' is helping students re-establish links to their Aboriginal heritage while encouraging students to attend school and strive for a successful future.

Science Success

13 students from Toormina High entered the 2012 International Competitions and Assessments for Schools in Science, run by the University of New South Wales. This competition attracts entries usually from the more talented students in government and non-government schools. 5 students were awarded Participation Certificates, 7 were awarded Credits and 1 student, Matthew Berrington, was awarded a High Distinction having achieved a grade in the top 1% of entrants.
This year Matthew has also attended the Rotary National Science Youth Forum and an international Science Conference in Sydney.
Next year Matthew hopes to study science at the Australian National University in Canberra.

Parent Information Session

Toormina High School will be holding an information session for parents/carers. This will be an opportunity for parents to learn about the laptop their child will be receiving. During this session students and parents/carers will be asked to sign a ‘User Charter' which sets out responsibilities for the use and care of the laptop.

The session will be held on Tuesday 10th November 2009 at 7pm. Parents and carers of Year 9 students have received a personal invitation to the session.

Introducing your TSO

Ree Higoe is the Technology Support Officer (TSO) for Toormina High School. Ree is employed full time to support students and teachers with Digital Education Revolution (DER) laptops.

Overview

The Commonwealth Government's Digital Education Revolution includes an element called the National Secondary Schools Computer Fund. The Commonwealth and NSW Governments have agreed to work together to provide a wirelessly enabled specialist educational laptop to every NSW public school student in years 9 to 12 by 2012. If your child is in Year 9 in a NSW public school they will receive a laptop before the end of this year.

The Office of Schools has taken the lead on this program to ensure that the focus remains firmly on transforming teaching and learning. This $442million project will see over 200,000 laptops distributed across 500+ school sites.

Evidence shows that where technology is used effectively in schools, the results are inspiring - improved grades and retention rates, greater participation by students and increased effectiveness by teachers.

The Digital Education Revolution will bring a new level of engagement to classrooms, where today's students will experience education like no other generation has.
