Acceleration at Toormina High School
At Toormina High School, we believe that high-potential students should be provided with opportunities to engage in learning that is appropriately challenging, stimulating and aligned with their individual strengths. As part of this commitment, selected Year 10 students may apply to accelerate in one Higher School Certificate (HSC) course while remaining enrolled in their regular pattern of study.
Acceleration provides students with the opportunity to commence Stage 6 learning earlier, allowing them to complete one HSC course ahead of their peers and gain valuable experience in senior studies. Students who successfully accelerate often develop stronger study habits, increased academic confidence, and a deeper understanding of the expectations required for success in the HSC.
Applications for acceleration are carefully considered through a rigorous review process. Selection is based on a combination of academic achievement, teacher professional judgement, student commitment to learning, and engagement in school. Students are expected to demonstrate consistently high levels of achievement across all subjects, typically reflected through a significant number of A and B grades in their reports, supported by positive teacher comments regarding effort, application and readiness for advanced study.
Students may apply to accelerate in any subject offered within the school's Year 11 curriculum. This approach recognises that students demonstrate strengths and passions across a broad range of learning areas and allows them to pursue advanced study in a field that aligns with their interests and future aspirations.
Toormina High School's acceleration pathway reflects our commitment to providing personalised learning opportunities that challenge students to achieve their personal best while ensuring they are well-supported throughout their educational journey.
