Additional learning support
At Toormina High School, we make sure every student is prepared and ready to learn. We provide support for students with disabilities and additional learning needs, enabling them to fully participate in all aspects of school life. Your child doesn’t need a formal diagnosis to access support in a regular classroom, and assistance can start at any point during their schooling.
Support that fits your child's needs
Some students need extra support to feel confident and achieve their best at school. We collaborate closely with families to create personalised support plans and adjustments tailored to each child’s unique needs.
Additional learning support may include:
- Teachers and support staff working together with students and their families
- Customised programs designed to meet the advanced learning needs of high potential and gifted students
- Small group tutoring focused on targeted literacy and numeracy support
- Regular check-ins to review and update individual support plans
- Specialist assistance for students learning English as an additional language or dialect (EAL/D)
Classroom adjustments might involve:
- Creating accessible learning environments
- Using assistive technology
- Providing tailored instructional resources
- Offering extra guidance, simplified content, or a different focus during lessons
Assessment adjustments can include:
- Allowing extra time
- Using simpler language
- Scheduling breaks during tasks
- Offering alternative ways to complete tasks (for example, oral presentations instead of written assignments)
We identify when a student needs help by:
- Observing changes in learning or behaviour
- Reviewing assessment results and progress
- Listening to students when they express concerns about their work
- Responding to concerns or requests for support from parents and carers
Support adjustments are planned with students, parents, and carers. They are regularly reviewed and updated as needed. If you think your child may benefit from extra help, please get in touch with us.
