The Quest for Excellence Program (QEP) is Toormina High School’s signature initiative for High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE). This exciting program is designed to recognise, extend and support students with exceptional ability across all four NSW HPGE domains: Creative, Intellectual, Physical, and Social-Emotional.
QEP blends the NSW Curriculum with rich, challenging and fast-paced learning experiences that keep students motivated and inspired. Our aim is simple: to help talented students thrive by giving them the right level of challenge, support and opportunity.
What QEP looks like in practice?
Students in the QEP enjoy a range of tailored, engaging and future-focused learning experiences, including:
- Differentiated curriculum that challenges students at their point of need
- Project-Based Learning that builds creativity, independence and problem-solving
- Competitions and enrichment opportunities across academic, creative and physical domains
- Specialist workshops and guest speakers who spark curiosity and broaden horizons
- Excursions and real-world experiences connected to classroom learning
- Mentorship programs that help students refine their interests and strengths
- Small, flexible class structures that allow for targeted extension
- Expert teachers who are passionate and skilled in High Potential and Gifted Education
Who is in the QEP?
In 2026, around 40 students have been selected through an application process and their participation in our HPGE Enrichment Day. These students form a dedicated learning cohort and are timetabled together for core subjects.
This structure gives us the flexibility to:
- group and regroup students based on their strengths and learning needs
- maintain a consistently high level of challenge
- extend learning at a faster pace where appropriate
- explore concepts in greater depth
Our long-term vision is to provide opportunities for acceleration in Stage 5 for students who are ready to move ahead more rapidly.
